What to do before and during the Inaugural League Draft

Aside

What to do before and during the Inaugural League Draft:

  1. Your OWN Rankings: Make up rankings for every position. I use TIERS when drafting. It’s easier to follow and I can see if a certain position needs to be addressed. Owners like rankings but with tiers you can target 1 player in a tier. Tiers help when your top players get drafted and you need that position.
  2. League Draft: Draft a mix of players. Older/Younger I try to plan out my dynasty rosters 3 to 5 years. I go for younger studs in the beginning rounds then later in the draft I fill in my holes and depth with older veterans or a sleeper I like.
  3. League Draft: Draft RB’s/WR’s early Make sure you know how many players in each position are drafted so you don’t miss out on a run of a certain position.
  4. Study each NFL team and coaches: What system do they run? Do they pass more or run more? If they are a running first team take a look at their OL. Is it good or average? I will address IDP later where this info is the key to winning.
  5. Know Scoring System: If the scoring system benefits a position more than another then draft that position early. QB’s I think you can wait on these days. If a league is PPR then rank the players accordingly.
  6. Know # of Starting Positions: If you can start 3 RB’s or have 2 Flex positions.
  7. Rookies: If the veteran draft includes rookies don’t overdraft them. Rookies haven’t started a game yet.
  8. Sleepers(players you really like): Wait until your roster is filled with starters.
  9. Know the league rules: When are waivers after the draft. You can wait and pick up players rather than trade players you just drafted.
  10. Trades during draft: Don’t move up in a round to get your player. If you have done your homework and have your tiers done you shouldn’t have to trade picks to move up.
  11. Know the rules part 2: IR is important. Are suspended players allowed to be put on IR. At the end of the draft maybe take a chance on a suspended player or hurt player that can help your team in the future.

Why Fantasy Football Owners Fail at Dynasty

Aside

Why owners fail in Dynasty:

  1. Don’t take the time to rank the players by YOUR scoring system. Most owners rely on rankings and think they are good for every league.
  2. Not knowing your scoring system. This is huge. If you play in a QB league where a TD is 6 pts but a RB/WR/TE only get 4 the value of each position is changed.
  3. Not knowing how many starters for each position can be started. How many flex positions are there. Which positions can be used in flex.
  4. Trading for the hot player. Trying to get the players that just performed well is not the right thing to do.
  5. Trading future rookie picks when your team is good but not great. Try building through the rookie draft if you team lacks star power and depth.
  6. Not searching the waiver wire each week. Don’t be lazy.
  7. Not following the news about players. It’s so easy to do with social media.
  8. Not using the IR correctly. Does the league allow suspended players on it.
  9. Not knowing the rules of the league. Know when the waiver wire opens each week. When the trading deadline is.
  10. Not playing to win. Being lazy and saying there is always next season is the wrong thing to do.

In-Season Hints to help dynasty owners

Aside

During the season a few things to look at:

  1. Always look at the waiver wire. You might not need the player but they can be used to obtain future picks.
  2. Owners info: Don’t put all your info on the league site. Never put a twitter handle out there because other owners will follow you and see which players you are asking about and others you don’t like.
  3. Email: Make one ONLY for fantasy football. Makes leagues easier to follow and no one can search your email. It’s amazing how much info you can get from an owner’s email online.
  4. Trades: I always put it out there to make me an offer. Owners love to send you a message what do you want for a certain player but don’t fall for this trick. All they are doing is finding out what is the cheapest way to get that player from you. If they have to make an offer they have to look at your roster and see what you need. If you don’t like the offer you can counter them if the offer was a good one. If it sucked then say NOT EVEN CLOSE. Let them come back to you with another offer.
  5. Trades part 2: Keep a list of who ask for what. Maybe they aren’t look at the player as much as the position. Maybe you can give up another player and get something for them and keep the player you like more.
  6. Players that another owner asked about: Google them. Did they become the starters or are they going to get more playing time this week. If there is something there then ask for more for that player. I see owners trading away players that could help their team for nothing.
  7. Voting on trades: I hate leagues that there is voting on trades but in some larger leagues it is necessary because some owners have less experience at playing fantasy football. 32 team leagues seem to always have voting which can help or hurt you when making trades.
  8. Social Media: Make an account for twitter and follow all the fantasy sites. These updates are great because you get information about players before other owners. Yes most owners do this but if you follow the right people you can find out who everyone is stashing for NEXT year.
  9. Players on Roster: Never fall in love with a player. When a player is doing well maybe it’s time to move them depending on age, NFL contract and how the team is doing. If a team isn’t doing well the coach might get fired and then the system might change.
